BioLogos - Francis Collins

Francis Collins is one of the world’s leading scientists and geneticists, and the founder of BioLogos, where he is now a Senior Fellow. In his early scientific career, he discovered the gene for cystic fibrosis. Then he led an international collaboration that first mapped the entire human genome. For that work he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science. In 2009 he was appointed as Director of the National Institutes of Health, where he served three presidents until 2021, including oversight of the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2006, Collins wrote the best-selling book <em>The Language of God</em>. It tells the story of his journey from atheism to Christian belief, showing that science actually enhances faith. The tremendous response to the book prompted Collins to found BioLogos. He envisioned it as a forum to discuss issues at the intersection of faith and science and to celebrate the harmony found there. His reputation quickly attracted a large network of faith leaders, including Tim Keller, Philip Yancey, and NT Wright. These and others joined the BioLogos conversation and affirmed the value of engaging science as believers. BioLogos is now an organization that reaches millions around the world.

In celebration of his world-class scientific accomplishments and deep Christian faith, Collins was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2020. It honors individuals who are “harnessing the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind’s place and purpose within it.” He joined a prestigious group of previous winners, including Mother Teresa, Francis Ayala, Charles Townes, Desmond Tutu, and Billy Graham.

Dr. Kristine Torjesen is the President and CEO of BioLogos, bringing over 20 years of experience in mobilizing research and resources to create healthier lives globally. She stepped into this role in March 2025, becoming the third president of BioLogos.

Before joining BioLogos, Dr. Torjesen served as the Senior Director of Network and Collaborative Research at FHI 360, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through science, research, and innovation. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing scientific research while remaining deeply committed to her Christian faith.

Dr. Torjesen has long valued BioLogos’ mission to explore God’s Word and God’s World to inspire authentic faith. “I have turned to BioLogos resources for years to help integrate faith and science in my life,” she says. “We are at a pivotal time in history with the exponential growth of science and technology and our enduring need for Christ. I am eager to engage deeply with the BioLogos mission and help shape it over the next decade to address these challenges and advance the Kingdom of God.”

Jim Stump is the Vice President at BioLogos and hosts the podcast, <a href="https://biologos.org/podcast/language-of-god">Language of God</a>. Jim also writes and speaks on behalf of BioLogos. He has a PhD in philosophy and was formerly a professor and academic administrator. His earlier books include <em>Four Views on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design</em> (Zondervan, 2017);<em> Science and Christianity: An Introduction to the Issues </em>(Blackwell, 2016); and <em>How I Changed My Mind about Evolution </em>(InterVarsity, 2016). David Buller is Director of Programs at BioLogos, where he works with program leads and editorial staff to advance the organization's mission. He also directs overall planning of BioLogos conferences and participates in organizational planning with BioLogos leadership and advisors.

Before coming to BioLogos in 2016, David was a Program Associate in the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, DC. At AAAS he helped plan and lead engagement initiatives in collaboration with scientists and faith leaders around the country. After completing his BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, David earned an MA in Theological Studies, Religion and Science Emphasis, from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. While there, David worked as a student coordinator on various events and symposia at the Zygon Center for Religion and Science. He is an elected Fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, having previously served as Student and Early Career Representative to the organization’s Executive Council.

Colin’s curiosity and awe for the natural world from an early age spurred his interest in the intersection of faith and science. Through his studies of ecology and environmental management, and later in his work promoting conservation as the Communications Director for the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, he continued to seek a theological understanding of God’s world and creation. As the Podcast Producer at BioLogos, he enjoys the opportunity to put his creative mind to work advancing the thoughtful message of harmony between faith and science through new audio and video projects.

Colin studied creative writing and environmental studies at Hope College and went on to receive his Masters of Environmental Management from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University concentrating in communications. He continues to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation with his wife and two boys while camping, sailing, hiking and exploring the wild places of this world.

She’s especially passionate about encouraging the truth that both are important parts of God’s plan.

Corrina lives in Raleigh, NC, with her husband, Mike, and feels blessed to have three of her four adult children living in the area. She loves traveling—especially to see family—teaching the first-grade “Raccoon Sunday School Class” at her church, quilting, and catching up with friends whenever she can. Having this opportunity to walk alongside God already at work with the BioLogos Team is an amazing gift to be treasured.

As the Content Specialist at BioLogos, Madeline works at the intersection of marketing, communications, and content development to execute the organization’s mission.

<span style="font-weight: 400;">With a Ph.D. in computational cell biology from Scripps Research in San Diego, CA, Kathryn combines scientific expertise with a deep passion for advancing conversations at the intersection of faith and science. After a fulfilling 12-year tenure at BioLogos, Kathryn took a hiatus to focus on family before returning in 2025, more committed than ever to its mission.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">As the organization’s first Program Director, Kathryn played a pivotal role in organizing transformative events, including two landmark </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Celebrating Creation</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> conferences with Rev. </span><a href="https://biologos.org/people/tim-keller"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tim Keller</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (2010, 2011) and the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Biology by the Sea</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> series of workshops for science teachers. She later led a $5.3 million subgrant program, funding 37 teams across six countries to explore the integration of evolution and Christian faith through scholarly work and accessible resources (2012-2015).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Kathryn also launched the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Public Engagement</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> program at BioLogos, which included establishing a </span><a href="https://biologos.org/voices"><span style="font-weight: 400;">speakers bureau</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and organizing </span><a href="https://conference.biologos.org/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">national conferences</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> aimed at fostering public dialogue on science and faith. As Resources Editor, she co-edited </span><a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-Changed-Mind-About-Evolution/dp/0830852905"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">How I Changed My Mind About Evolution</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (InterVarsity Press, 2016) alongside </span><a href="https://biologos.org/people/jim-stump"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Jim Stump</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and led the creation of </span><a href="https://biologos.org/integrate"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Integrate</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a curriculum designed to equip parents and educators to navigate the complex relationship between science and faith.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Outside of her work at BioLogos, Kathryn serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Scientific Affiliation, an organization that has been connecting Christians in science since 1941. She also leads the meals ministry at church and helps organize the annual book fair at her children’s school. In her free time, Kathryn and her family love traveling and discovering Michigan’s state parks and beaches. She also enjoys curling up with a good book, accompanied by their adorable Cavapoo, Teddy.</span>

Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist who studies how climate change impacts us and how we can effectively respond. She is globally recognized as a United Nations Champion of the Earth and an Oxfam Sister of the Planet, and has been named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People, Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers, and FORTUNE’s World’s Greatest Leaders.

Katharine is known for her ability to translate complex climate issues into accessible public discourse. Dwight Baker became the third president of Baker Book House Company in 1997, following his father, Richard Baker, and his grandfather/company founder, Herman Baker. Dwight entered the business while in middle school, working in the shipping department at the family bookstore. During college Dwight joined the publishing division, and he became art director upon graduation. With the formation of a non-family company board in 2012, Dwight served as chair until 2020.

Dwight has served as chair on three other boards—Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, Theological Book Network, and the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. For more than fifteen years he has also been a tutor and Kids Hope mentor for urban students. He’ll be outdoors whenever possible, enjoying the amazing natural areas of Michigan.

Bishop Claude Richard Alexander Jr. serves as senior pastor for The Park Church in Charlotte, NC. He is past president of the Hampton University Ministers Conference, and currently serves on the governing boards of Christianity Today, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Wycliffe Bible Translators. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College (1985), a Master of Divinity Degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (1988), and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2004). He and his wife Kimberly have two daughters, Camryn and Carsyn.

April Maskiewicz Cordero, PhD, is a professor of biology and Vice Provost at Point Loma Nazarene University. Her research focuses on developing more effective approaches for teaching ecology and evolution that enable students to develop not only factual knowledge, but biological ways of thinking and reasoning about the living world. As a Christian biologist trained in science education research, she is in a unique position to investigate science students’ perceptions of the relationship between scientific issues that evoke controversy (i.e. origins, evolution, human origins) and Christian faith. Dr. Maskiewicz Cordero gave a TEDx talk on evolution and faith and she was featured in “From the Dust,” a BioLogos sponsored documentary. She is also active in several professional development projects with schoolteachers as well as university biology faculty, is one of the six authors of the <a href="http://biologos.org/integrate">BioLogos Integrate curriculum</a>, and was one of four professors coordinating the PLNU/BioLogos Biology by the Sea Christian school teacher program.

Charmaine DM Royal, PhD, MS Charmaine Royal is the Robert O. Keohane Professor of African &amp; African American Studies, Biology, Global Health, and Family Medicine &amp; Community Health at Duke University. She directs the Duke Center on Genomics, Race, Identity, Difference and the Duke Center for Truth, Racial Healing &amp; Transformation. Dr. Royal’s research, scholarship, and teaching focus on ethical, social, scientific, and clinical implications of human genetics and genomics, particularly issues at the intersection of genetics and "race". Her specific interests and primary areas of work include genetics and genomics in African and African Diaspora populations; sickle cell disease and trait; public and professional perspectives and practices regarding "race", ethnicity, and ancestry; genetic ancestry inference; and genotype-environment interplay. A fundamental aim of her work is to dismantle ideologies and systems of racial hierarchy in science, healthcare, and society. She serves on numerous national and international advisory boards and committees for government agencies, professional organizations, research initiatives, not-for-profit entities, and corporations. Dr. Royal obtained a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, master’s degree in genetic counseling, and doctorate in human genetics from Howard University. She completed postgraduate training in ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) research and bioethics at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and in epidemiology and behavioral medicine at Howard University Cancer Center.

Se Kim serves as the Director of Membership and Governance at the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) – one of three academies that make up the U.S. National Academies, where she oversees all the activities of the NAM’s membership, the elections, and works closely with the governing Council. Se also directs the NAM Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Program, a fellowship for mid-career professionals in health care and biomedical sciences. Prior to the National Academies, she supported all science and society programs as the Deputy Chief Program Officer at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where for several years she helped direct the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) Program. She received her BS in biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin, a PhD in molecular and human genetics from Baylor College of Medicine, and an Executive MBA from the University of Maryland, College Park. <span class="il">Se</span> divides her time between Washington DC and Philadelphia, where her husband serves as the pastor of multicultural ministries at a local church. She is passionate about building impactful strategies for mission-based organizations and encouraging thoughtful dialogue between the scientific and faith communities. <span class="il">Se</span> is an elected Fellow of American Scientific Affiliation (ASA), and she also currently serves as a founding board member for Science for the Church.

She serves as the President and CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network. Jessica received her Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has held research positions at John Hopkins University, University of Michigan, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where she researched how climate has changed throughout Earth’s history. Prior to joining EEN, Jessica was a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy.</div>

Roseanne J. Sension is a professor of chemistry at the University of Michigan. She received her doctorate in chemistry in 1986 from the University of California, Berkeley, and after post-doctoral positions at the Universities of Oregon and Pennsylvania, has been a professor at Michigan since 1992. Her research focuses on the interaction of light with matter, with emphasis on applications in photobiology. She has co-authored over ninety articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings and is a fellow of the American Physical Society.

John Walton is an emeritus professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College in Illinois and an editor and writer of Old Testament comparative studies and commentaries. Throughout his research, Walton has focused his attention on comparing the culture and literature of the Bible and the ancient Near East. He has published dozens of books, articles and translations, both as writer and editor, including his book, <cite><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0830837043/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0830837043&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thebiofou06-20&amp;linkId=OJYXJAVNHUGXFODM">The Lost World of Genesis One</a>.</cite>

Jeffrey Wright is the President and CEO of Urban Ministries, the largest provider of digital and print resources to African American churches and denominations. Prior to leading Urban Ministries, he served as the Vice President of Corporate Development at Bristol Myers Squibb, and a product Manager in the pharmaceutical division at Johnson &amp; Johnson. Jeff graduated with honors from Fisk University earning a degree in Political Science, and has a J.D. from Georgetown University Law School. He was admitted to the Bar and US. Supreme Court Bar. He is also an alumnus of the International Fellows Program of the Columbia School of International Affairs, and has done post graduate work in the Program for Instruction for Lawyers at the Harvard Law School, and at the Wharton School. He has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations including Fuller Theological Seminary and the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association.
