
Jay Butler
Dr. Jay Butler has had a long career in public health and has held many leadership positions both at the state and national level. He recently served as the Deputy Director for Infectious Disease at the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. Butler earned his BS in zoology from North Carolina State University, an MD from the University of North Carolina and completed a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and he is board certified in medicine, pediatrics, and infectious diseases. He began at CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in the Wisconsin Division of Health. He went on to complete a preventive medicine residency in CDC’s Respiratory Diseases Branch and an infectious disease fellowship at Emory University.
Dr. Butler has also served as director of CDC’s Arctic Investigations Program, has served two stints as Chief Medical Officer for the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, two years as Alaska State Epidemiologist, and four years as Senior Director of the Division of Community Health for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
