Science is Good: Science is a Gift from God

Science is a God-given tool, one that helps us be closer to God by serving others and better understanding His world.

The rising distrust in expertise and declining investment in research hinders our ability to use science to live out Kingdom values. In this moment, we invite you to stand together with us in affirming that Science is Good.

At BioLogos, we believe that supporting science is a modern expression of Christian faith –  one that helps us live out the Kingdom values of wisdom, stewardship, and mercy.

As Christians, we cannot be silent as life-saving programs are cut and scientists are vilified. The Science is Good campaign is our response to this cultural moment. First with our open letter about science and now through this interactive dashboard, we are inviting Christians across the country to explore the goodness of science and take simple, faithful actions to support it.

Together, let’s show the world that science is a powerful partner in living out our call to love God and neighbor.

Christians Do Good Through Science

Faithful Christians across the country use science – in the lab, the hospital, and out in creation – to heal and better understand God’s world. Their faith inspires and sustains them in these endeavors.

Whether they labor to map the human genome, care for the natural world or explore the cosmosthese individuals’ stories show us the wonderful interplay of faith and science.

We’ll be featuring a rotating series of Christians sharing what drew them to science and how their work has brought them closer to God – check out the first video:

Science is a God-Given Tool

Science helps us protect our communities, care for the sick, and explore God’s world. Christians should be among its strongest advocates. Christians should be among its strongest advocates.

To help frame this call, we turn to Matthew 25. While we do not take these parables as direct commentary on modern science, they offer enduring insight about living faithfully in the world.

When we apply the Kingdom values found in Jesus’ parables – wisdom, stewardship, and mercy – we stand for the Kingdom of God.

Wisdom: Science is a Tool of Preparation

In the parable of the bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1-13), Jesus honors as wise those who were prepared – a reminder that wisdom means anticipating challenges and responding with readiness.

Today, science is an important means of equipping us for crises we can anticipate so that we are not caught unaware. Explore the stories below that dive into the wisdom of science:

Stewardship: Science is a Tool to Multiply Talents

The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) reminds us that we are entrusted with gifts not to bury them, but to use them for good.

When we support robust education, research funding, and evidence-based innovation, we are helping to steward God’s gifts to scientists so they can bear fruit. These resources show how stewarding scientific talents can lead to deeper faith:

Mercy: Science is a Tool to Protect the Least

Jesus suggests in the parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46) that the nations and their people will be judged based on how they treat the hungry, the sick, the stranger, and the prisoner.

Science, when directed by compassion, is one of the most effective tools we have to live out this calling. Check out these stories of scientists protecting the least of these:

Awe: Science is a Tool to Feel Wonder

Science isn’t just a tool for solving problems – it can also help us feel a sense of awe. From the smallest molecule to the largest star, we can use science to expand our wonder at creation. Here are three quick, everyday ways science can be a tool of awe and wonder:

Look Up

Glance up on a clear night and take in the immense wonder of the night sky. Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God.

While our eyes can take in plenty of awe on their own, science can heighten our appreciation of the cosmos. Tonight, pick out an alluring constellation. What have astronomers learned about it?

Explore the wonder behind some of our favorite astronomy images here.

Dive Deep

We are surrounded by the beauty of creation, and we can use science to deepen our appreciation of it.

Take note of what catches your eye next time you’re outdoors – perhaps a chirping bird, or a blooming flower. When you get home, search online for what you saw and learn what scientists have uncovered about it.

Take a Bite

Food is God’s love made delectable. When you sit down for dinner, consider all of the scientific work – from farming to food safety – that went into it.

It doesn’t take a PhD to appreciate a delicious bite, but exploring the science behind how our brain registers taste can give us a greater appreciation of the gift of food.

Action Center: What Can Christians Do to Stand Together for Science?

We know that the idea of standing up for science can feel overwhelming. Can one person really make a difference?

Our answer: Yes! Individuals taking small steps together can make a big difference – and you don’t have to wait to get started. Here are three things you can do today to support the God-given gift of science.

Talk: Make a Commitment to Conversation

Talking to loved ones about its goodness is among the most important things you can do to stand up for science. Research indicates that people trust messages from their loved ones more than any others – including those from scientists.

We invite you to sign our Commitment to Conversation. By signing, you pledge to discuss the goodness of science with at least one person in your life.
